Conflict in Gaza
[Last updated 30/05/25]
The situation in Gaza is intolerable, and Palestinians continue to face immense suffering. Reports of the suffering and threat of starvation in Gaza are abominable. The devastation from this conflict must end.
I strongly oppose the expansion of Israel’s military operations. The Israeli plan to control Gaza and permit only minimal amounts of food to reach civilians there is morally unjustifiable, wholly disproportionate and utterly counterproductive. Negotiations are the only way to bring this conflict to an end.
The Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary have been clear that the UK Government will take further action if Israel pursues the military offensive as threatened, while failing to ensure the unhindered provision of aid. I support the necessary suspension of UK negotiations with this Israeli Government on a free trade agreement.
I know our government has asked for clarification on Israel’s new plans to deliver aid through private companies and has criticised Israel’s proposed delivery mechanism of aid. The UK will not support any aid mechanism that seeks to deliver political or military objectives or that puts vulnerable civilians at risk.
The UN and humanitarian partners must be also able to carry out their work in safety, in accordance with UN principles.
I deeply regret the breakdown of the previous ceasefire deal. It was the best chance to return the hostages to their families, surge aid into Gaza and bring the bloodshed to an end. I call for all parties to return to a ceasefire urgently and will support the UK Government in working with international partners to achieve this.
